Indra has signed a contract valued at over €65 million with Colombia’s Aerocivil to modernize more than half of the country's radar systems, marking the largest civil aeronautics agreement ever in Latin America.
The initiative will enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of air traffic management across Colombia’s challenging mountainous terrain.
The project includes the deployment of seven primary radars — one of which is long-range — and seven Mode S MSSR secondary radars, each integrated with ADS-B systems. Indra will also deliver seven standalone ADS-B surveillance systems to further strengthen aircraft monitoring across all phases of flight, from takeoff to approach.
All radars will be equipped with 3D technology designed to provide precise aircraft location data, including altitude, even under severe weather conditions or interference from rugged terrain. These enhancements aim to ensure uninterrupted civil aviation operations while improving punctuality and optimizing airspace use.
New radar installations are planned for several key sites, including high-altitude locations in the Andean mountain range. In total, the network upgrade will affect more than 50% of Colombia’s current radar infrastructure, covering both renewal and the construction of new stations.
According to Indra, the project encompasses planning, design, installation, commissioning, and cybersecurity integration across the national system. This is expected to facilitate more seamless and accurate tracking of aircraft movements and support the country’s goal of achieving a highly efficient, safe, and sustainable civil aviation system.
