Afgan forces have officially taken over the controversial night raids since the U.S and Afghanistan signed a deal on the special forces operations last week. Covering all special operations in Afghanistan, the deal is expected to pave the way for a strategic partnership pact between Washington and Kabul on the U.S. presence beyond 2014, when most of the 130,000 NATO-led troops are due to leave. Pentagon spokesman George Little called the agreement as a "major step forward," saying in a tweet that the pact "marks progress in transition process and in Afghan capabilities". Afghan special operations forces now have the authority to lead the missions, giving them sole authority to search private homes and compounds, although they can have "support from U.S. forces as required or requested."
