Indian Ministry of Defense has requested competitors, in the $1 billion Navy tender for the acquisition of 16 helicopters, to extend their proposals until December 31. The deadline for proposals concluded in July. Sikorsky and NHIndustries (NHI) are competing to win the tender and are awaiting the final results of the trials. Meanwhile, NHI has vehemently protested against Sikorsky’s acceptance into the final round of competitions stating it does not meet the technical requirements. Eurocopter, in a written letter to the MoD, sought clarifications from the government over the Sikorsky. Despite the delays, the Defence Ministry has already floated a global tender for the purchase of an additional 75 choppers worth $4 billion. The latest acquisition will allow the Indian Navy to replace Sea King helicopters from the 1980’s.
