Taiwan’s defence minister Kao Hua-chu has announced his country’s plan to two warships from the U.S to modernise its naval force amid a perceived military threat from China. While addressing Parliament, Kao said two Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates, now serving in the US navy, will be delivered to Taiwan by 2015. "The defence ministry has decided to take the two Perry-class frigates. It is a good bargain," Kao added. With an estimated cost of $240 million, the two ships will replace two of eight now ageing Knox-class frigates which Taiwan acquired in the early 1990s. Even though Taiwan achieved independence in 1949, China is claiming sovereignty over the country and guarantees to take it back by force if necessary.
