The U.S. Air Force recently fired a two-star general from the U.S. intercontinental missile base for ‘misconduct’, close on the heels of two US Marine Corps generals being fired for their failure to defend an Afghan base.

Just two days ago, the commander of the 20th Air Force, Major General Michael Carey of  the U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees America's nuclear arsenal and space operations, was relieved of his post during an investigation into gambling issues.  Last week, the U.S. Marine Corps fired two generals upon their failure to defend an Afghanistan base, Camp Bastion from a Taliban attack last year.

A four-month investigation concluded that Major General Charles Gurganus, the top Marine commander in the region at the time, and Major General Gregg Sturdevant "did not take adequate force protection measures within the range of responses proportionate to the threat," the Marine Corps official was quoted as saying to news agencies.

The USAF stressed that the matter was not tied to the readiness or security of America's nuclear missiles. "The nuclear deterrence mission is one of great focus and discipline. Personal behavior is vital to that, especially from a commander,” the USAF official was quoted as saying in the report.

The 20th Air Force is responsible for the nation's three intercontinental ballistic missile wings, and in recent months, over 19 crew members at 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota have been decertified upon poor inspection.

It is believed that Carey’s removal has been inspired by the recent failing inspections. But USAF has denied these claims and added Carey remains in the Air Force as the investigation continues but will be reassigned.
