ThyssenKrupp Launches First A200 MEKO Frigate for Algeria

The German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) shipyard launched the first type MEKO A200 frigate built for the naval forces of Algeria.
 
The Algerian navy forces bought two type Meko A200 frigates from TKMS for 2.17 billion euros, with an option to extend the contract, which was signed in March 2012 for two more units. The contract provides logistical support and training for the crews.
 
Algeria has also ordered six Super Lynx Mk 140 helicopters from AgustaWestland which will operate from these ships. Among others, the helicopters will be armed with weapons to engage surface ships, including Mokopane missiles supplied by the South African company Denel Dynamics and other, unspecified infra-red guided missiles.
 
According to unconfirmed media reports, the frigates are to be armed with RBS 15 Mk3 anti-ship missiles, vertical-launch Denel Dynamics Umkhonto surface-to-air missiles, OTO Melara 76 mm cannon and medium-calibre Rheinmetall guns, and MU 90 torpedoes.
