Head of Russian arms export agency Rosoboronexport, Anatoly Isaikin has confirmed that China has signed a contract to purchase advanced Russian-made S-400 air defense systems, Kommersant reported Monday.
Isaikin did not disclose much details about the contract but said that China will become the first buyer of the Russian air defense system. China had signed a contract to purchase four S-400 systems in September 2014.
S-400 is an upgraded version of S-300 air defense system and is capable of targeting 36 airplanes at a range of 150 kms. The defense system is supported by ballistic missiles.
Earlier reports in Vedomosti report in November had reported that China had signed a $3 billion contract for at least six air defense systems.
