Saab has won a contract from Latvian Ministry of defense for Robotsystem  (RBS) 70 missiles.

Deliveries will take place during the period 2015-2016, the company announced today.

This order for missiles is part of Latvia’s long-term plan to further increase its air defence capabilities. The contract includes the delivery of missiles, training and associated equipment plus an option for additional orders.

“The RBS 70 is a modern system with a long lifespan. We can see that an increasing number of customers are taking advantage of its flexible design, which allows for the system to be continuously upgraded and adapted to evolving needs,” Anna Fröjd, head of market area Nordic and Baltic, Saab said.

“Anti-missile defense is one of our main and strategic priority in order to strengthen Latvia`s defense and security.” Latvian Minister of Defence Raimonds Bergmanis said.

The Saab portfolio of short-range ground-based air defence missile systems includes the RBS 70 and the further enhanced RBS 70 NG. The RBS 70 system has a track-record on the market with more than 1,600 launchers and over 17,000 missiles delivered to nineteen countries.

BS 70 is a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) designed for anti-aircraft warfare in all climate zones and with less or no support from other force.

In 2011, Saab Bofors Dynamics announced the introduction of the new RBS 70 New Generation (RBS 70 NG). The upgraded version included an improved sighting system capable of night vision and improved training and after-action review features.
