Indian Cyber Security Watchdog Notes 39,730 Cyber Tracking Incidents This Year

Indian cyber security watchdog Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has observed rise in the number of cyber attacks this year and have tracked about 39,730 incidents till October.

Similarly, a total number of 44,679 Cyber security incidents were detected in 2014, meanwhile 49,455 incidents occurred in 2015, IT and Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told Loksabha today. 

Over the period, the nature and pattern of the incidents have become more sophisticated as well as intricate. The incidents include Phishing, scanning, probing, and Website intrusions and defacements, virus and malicious code, Denial of Service attacks. Most of the attacks are directed from cyber space of different countries, including Pakistan, Prasad was quoted as saying by The Economic Times today.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the government agency that collects and analysis crime data states that 5,693 cyber crimes were registered during 2013, and 9,622 cases in 2014, meanwhile 11,592 crimes in 2015.

Similarly, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the investigative police agency, has registered 11 cases related to cyber crimes in the year 2013. Further, about 20 and 25 in the year 2014 and 2015. 

The Indian government has taken various steps in the form of legal framework, emergency response, awareness, training, legal framework and implementation of best practices to prevent occurrences of cyber breaches and cyber crime threats, he said. 

"Government has initiated setting up of National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) to generate necessary situational awareness of existing and potential cyber security threats and enable timely information sharing for proactive, preventive and protective actions by individual entities," Chaudhary said. 

CERT-In is in the process of setting up a Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis centre for detection of computer systems infected by malware and to notify, enable cleaning and securing systems of end-users to prevent further malware infections.
