Algeria has reportedly ordered Russian-built BMPT Terminator tank combat vehicles in a contract signed in April 2016, local news daily reports.
According to Algerian news daily Mena Defense, the deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2018 and continue until the end of 2019. It has not been confirmed how many vehicles will be delivered, but the report claims 300 have been ordered to accompany T-90SA main battle tanks.
Algeria previously evaluated the original BMPT in 2013 but chose to order the lighter but better protected Terminator II version, BMPT-72 Tank Support Combat Vehicle.
The BMPT manufactured by UralVagonZavod (UVZ) has two versions of the vehicle based on the T-72 battle tank chassis — "the Terminator 1" and "the Terminator 2." The BMPT-72 is fitted with a state-of-the-art guided weapons system and is capable of destroying enemy infantry vehicles, tanks and other armored objects, as well as helicopters.
The Terminator 2 is equipped with night vision, a laser range finder, as well as an integrated laser controlled missile guidance system. It can detect targets within a five-kilometer range, day or night.
