Macro Industries is being awarded a $28 million contract for a maximum of 200 sets of panels and hardware for a light-weight floor ballistic protection system for the V-22 Osprey aircraft.

Work is expected to be completed in December 2022, the US Department of Defense said in a statement Monday.

The installed set shall pass qualification testing and shall provide ballistic protection to the specified floor area in the cargo and cockpit compartments while maintaining access to all aircraft tie down points, litter attachment points and the cargo hook well doors.

The system shall be modular, to allow partial installation based on mission requirements. The system shall also be corrosion/fluid resistant & durable enough to withstand operational rigor, according to an RFP issued by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) in May this year.

Ballistic protection systems are intended to protect the helicopter from small arms fire when it comes in to land in a combat situation.
