A US Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion military helicopter reportedly crashed in Kunigami district of Japan’s Okinawa province.

Around 5:15 pm local time, an American military helicopter deployed at Futenma base near US northern training center in the northern part of Okinawa main island burst into flames, local media reported Wednesday.

Local police have been sent to the scene to investigate the situation.

The CH 53 helicopter is a large transport helicopter of the US military that can transport up to 55 people, with a total length of about 30 meters, weighing approximately 15 tons.

On 13 August 2004, the same type of CH 53 crashed into the premises of Okinawa International University adjacent to the US Futenma base in Ginowan City, and it burst into flames on August 13, 2004.
