General Dynamics to Upgrade US Army’s 786 M1A1 Abrams Tanks for $2.6 Billion
General Dynamics has won $2.6 billion contract for the upgrade of up to 786 M1A1 configured Abrams vehicles to newly configured M1A2 System Enhancement Package Version 3.
The contract also includes upgrading M1A1 vehicles to M1A12S and M1A2-K vehicles. Work is expected to be complete by Dec. 21, 2020, the US department of defense said in a statement Thursday.
SEPv4 upgrades include the Commander's Primary Sight (formerly known as the Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer), an improved Gunner's Primary Sight and enhancements to sensors, lethality and survivability.
General Dynamics delivered the first of six initial production units of the latest M1A2 Abrams main battle tank with updated electronics, weapons and protection systems to the US Army in October this year.
