US Orders Small Reconnaissance Drones For Army
The United States (US) has ordered small reconnaissance drones for its army from FLIR Systems.
The contract for Black Hornet Personal Reconnaissance Drones is worth $39 million, the company said in a statement.
According to the company, the drones are small enough to fit a soldier's pocket or palm. It measures 6.6 inches in length and weighs 1.16 ounces.
The nano UAVs will enable the army to get a view of the battlefield.
These drones can provide situational awareness and beyond visual line-of-sight capability day or night at a distance of up to 1.24 miles, covering ground at a max speed of 20 feet per second.
The "nearly silent" combat systems can provide constant covert coverage of the battlefield for almost half an hour, transmitting both live video and high-definition photographs back to the operator.
Deliveries are scheduled to start soon, the company stated.
