Indian Defence Orders from Russia Touch $10B

The portfolio of defence orders from India to Russia are currently standing at US$10 billion. 

At the recently concluded Aero India 2019 airshow, Rosoboronexport (part of the Rostec Corporation) conducted a series of productive negotiations and consultations with the Indian partners on military and technical cooperation, which resulted in signing a number of contractual documents, the company said in a statement. 

Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov and Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the Russian national exhibit on the first day of the event. 

The main themes of the meetings were the promising projects on the supplies and production in India of various types of the Russian military equipment, primarily within the implementation of the Make in India state programme. Also included is the after-sale services, maintenance and modernization.

Russian Helicopters Holding signed necessary memoranda during the airshow to jointly manufacture Ka-226T helicopters with India for $1 billion.

India and Russia have signed many other important contracts. This includes $5.4 billion contract for S-400 missile systems,  $847 million contract for 21 used MiG-29 fighters and $819 million deal for the purchase of additional 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets.

The other deals that India recently signed with Russia include a $940 million contract for 2 Talwar-class frigates, $960 million for 2 Russian-Built Admiral Grigorovich Frigates and a $1.1 billion order for 48 Mi-17 helicopters.

India is also likely to have agreed to lease one of Akula-2 class SSN from Russia for reportedly $3.3 billion.
