Naval Group Wins $605 Million for First Phase of Australian Future Submarine Program

Naval Group has announced the signing of the first phase of the Submarine Design contract with the Australian government.

The Submarine Design Contract is the first contract workscope to be fully executed under the Strategic Partnering Agreement for the Australian Future Attack-class Submarine Program, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

The scope for this phase of work includes the ongoing maturation of the Attack Class design as it progresses into the next design phase known as the Definition phase. This will include the source selection of over 100 critical and main equipment that will contribute to the submarine design solution.

The Submarine Design Contract also includes ongoing preparations for the build of the Attack Class in the Osborne shipyard in South Australia, including ongoing support to Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) for the design and build of the Submarine Construction Yard and the ICT systems that will be employed in there.

The first phase of the Submarine Design Contract is worth $605 million and will extend through to 2021.

In February this year, Naval group and the Australian government signed a Future Submarine Program Strategic Partnering Agreement (SPA). This agreement with Australia will see Naval Group transfer the “know-how” and “know-why” to Australia.

Suppliers of the top five pieces of equipment including the main motor, diesel generators, switchboards, batteries and weapons discharge systems have been reviewed and will be announced this year.

The first Attack class submarine, to be named HMAS Attack, will be delivered to the Navy in the early 2030s. The $50 billion Attack class program will see 12 regionally superior submarines designed and built in Australia for the Navy.
