US Likely To Sell 56 SM-3 Missiles to Japan For $1.15B

The United States is likely to have approved the sale of 56 Standard Missile-3 Block IB missiles to Japan for $1.15 billion.

The required certification notifying Congress of today’s possible sale has been delivered, Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a press release Tuesday.

The contract also includes missile canisters, US Government and contractor representatives' technical assistance, engineering and logistical support services, and other related elements of logistics and program support. 

The proposed sale will provide Japan with increased ballistic missile defense capability to assist in defending the Japanese homeland and US personnel stationed there.

The prime contractor for the SM-3 Block IB All Up Rounds will be Raytheon Missile Systems, Tucson, Arizona.  The prime contractor for the canisters will be BAE Systems, Minneapolis, Minnesota.  There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
