Raytheon Wins US Army’s Javelin Contract

Raytheon has won a $185 million contract to support US Army’s Javelin Weapon System.

“Raytheon was awarded a $185 million contract for the Javelin Weapon System full rate production, All Up Rounds, Command Launch Unit retrofits, battery coolant units, Javelin outdoor trainers, outdoor trainer instruction station, tripods, Javelin vehicle launcher and electronics,” the US Department of Defense said in a statement Thursday.

Work will be performed in Tucson, Arizona, with an estimated completion date of August 31, 2023. 

The FGM-148 Javelin is a man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank missile that uses an automatic infrared guidance that allows the user to seek cover immediately after launch, as opposed to wired-guided systems. The user has to actively guide the weapon throughout the engagement. The Javelin's HEAT warhead is capable of defeating modern tanks by attacking them from above where their armour is thinnest, and is also useful against fortifications in a direct attack flight.
