The size of half a football pitch, the Royal Engineers' new Deployable Engineer Workshop can be up and running within 24 hours and allows the Sappers to really live up to their motto 'Ubique' (everywhere).>> The Deployable Engineer Workshop (DEW) programme has come about thanks to a 6.7m investment by the MOD and will enhance the construction support that the Sappers and other specialists provide on operations.>> The new capability has been greeted with delight by the Royal Engineers' tradesmen and Field Support Squadrons who will use it.>> The DEW covers the same area as half a football pitch when erected and can be up and running within 24 hours. It provides a well-equipped, deployable workshop which can be used for a wide variety of tasks, enabling carpenters and joiners, welders, metal smiths, electricians, plumbers, Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) fitters, and painters and finishers to produce items in support of operations.>> These can range from door and window frames to signs and fencing as well as repairs to existing infrastructure items. DEW also contains the office facilities for the design and management required to support a busy workshop. All the ancillaries, power distribution and lighting allows for expeditionary operations.>> The first DEW one of four was brought into service by the Battlefield Utilities (BFU) team of the MOD's Defence Equipment and Support organisation. Richard Holloway, BFU team leader, said:>> "I am delighted that BFU IPT [Integrated Project Team] has been able to provide Royal Engineer tradesmen with the wide range of engineering facilities in such a good working environment, and to bring this new capability into service on time and within budget. DEW has successfully passed extensive user trials and I am confident it will perform well in the demanding operational environment.
