Damen Tests Combat Systems on Indonesia’s 2nd SIGMA Frigate

Damen Shipyards has completed installation and testing of combat systems on Indonesia’s second SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) guided missile frigate, the KRI Gusti Ngurah Rai (332).

“Damen Shipyards Group and its partner PT PAL recently completed installation and testing of combat systems to the second of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence’s SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) guided missile frigates, the KRI Gusti Ngurah Rai (332),” the company said in a statement Wednesday.

The combat systems installed and tested include the following:

• VL MICA for defence from airborne threats
• Exocet for defence from offensive targets at greater distance
• Torpedo system for protection against submarine threat
• 35mm rapid-fire cannon to respond to threats from both air and sea
• Electronic detection system to divert enemy attacks with electromagnetic redirection
• Modification of the computer operated operational system in order to operate the above

The final phase prior to handover was successfully completed on February 21st with sea-going trials – the sea acceptance test (SAT), Damen said.

The SIGMA 10514 PKR class is a multi-mission platform equipped for anti-ship warfare (AShW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-air warfare (AAW).

The contract for the two PKR frigates between Jakarta and Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) was signed in 2012. The contract includes extensive knowledge and technology transfer. The PKR frigates are constructed via a modular process operating simultaneously at DSNS in the Netherlands and the PT PAL shipyard in Indonesia.

The lead ship, the KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata, was commissioned into the TNI-AL fleet in April 2017. Combat systems were installed on that vessel in December 2019.

The second ship, named I Gusti Ngurah Rai, was delivered to the navy in November 2017. Like its preceding sister-ship, the KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai has a length of 105.11 m, width of 14.2 m, a top speed of 28 knots and range of 5,000 nm.

The combat installation and testing phase of PKR construction forms part of the contract's transfer programme, with Damen providing training for the vessel’s crew in the operation and maintenance of all systems installed.
