Sukhoi Superjet 100 Engine Fails, Makes Emergency Landing

A Sukhoi Superjet 100 made an emergency landing in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on Tuesday after one of its engines failed.

The aircraft took off from southwestern Russian city of Saratov and landed safely at 7.16 a.m., local media reported.

A Sukhoi Superjet travelling from Berlin landed safely at Moscow's Vnukovo International Airport in February after a warning of landing gear malfunction.

On May 5 last year, an Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet 100 burst into flames, killing 41 people, shortly after being struck by lightning. After departing from Sheremetyevo to head towards Murmansk city, the plane was struck by lightning and returned immediately to make a “jumping” landing at the airport. Videos show the aircraft sliding sideways shortly after landing, before bursting into flames.

In 2012, a Superjet being flown on a demonstration flight in Indonesia crashed into a mountain, killing all 45 people on board.

Russian authorities grounded all of these jets in December 2016 after a defect was discovered in one of the aircraft's tail section. Russian Federal Air Transport Agency reported that during the maintenance of Sukhoi Superjet 100-95B aircraft serial No. 95018, tail No. RA-89010, cracks were detected in the lugs of the stabilizer upper and lower bracket attachment bands.
