Israeli Insurance Company Hit by Cyber Attack, Data Leaked

Israeli insurance company Shirbit has been hit by a massive cyber attack resulting in personal details of customers leaking online.

On December 1, Shirbit and Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD), began to investigating the cyber event. An initial inspection indicated that the data breach concerns information about customers' insurance details, INCD and Capital Market Authority said in a joint statement.

The company’s website crashed after hackers attacked the website and servers on Monday. Information leaked online includes ID numbers, drivers licenses and addresses of Shirbit customers, including that of a senior judge. Credit card details were however not leaked.

Shirbit has been providing car insurance for state employees for several years now. Information pertaining on civil servants may have now been compromised.

An unknown hacker group calling itself Black Shadow took responsibility on Twitter. It featured photos of some of the leaked documents that included the addresses, names of family members, and automobile records allegedly belonging to the company’s clients.

“A huge cyber attack has taken been place by Black Shadow team. There has been a massive attack on the network infrastructure of Shirbit Company, which is in Israel economic sphere,” read a Twitter post by @blacksh56710724 after the attacks.

The account has now been suspended.
