Thyssenkrupp Hands over Fourth Submarine to Egyptian Navy

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems handed over S44, the fourth Type 209/1400mod-class submarine, to the Egyptian Navy.

The contract for the delivery of the first two 209/1400 mod class submarines to the Arab Republic of Egypt was signed in 2011. In 2015, Egypt decided to take the option for two additional units. The first submarine was handed over in December 2016, the second in August 2017 and the third in April 2020.

The 209/1400mod-class submarine features advanced technologies, high combat strength, enhanced battery payload and low signatures.

It can be deployed to conduct maritime defence and conflict prevention operations, as well as carry out surveillance and intelligence-gathering activities.

With a surface displacement capacity of 1,450 tonnes, the vessels are 62m-long and can accommodate a crew of 30.

Type 209 submarines are armed with eight bow 533 mm (21 in) torpedo tubes and 14 torpedoes. The Type 209/1200s used by Greece and South Korea, and the Type 209/1400s used by Turkey are also armed with Sub-Harpoon missiles. Boats used by South Korea can be armed with 28 mines in place of torpedoes and Harpoon missiles; while the Indian boats can carry 24 mines externally.
