As the Indonesian T-50i Golden Eagle jet was flying over a residential area in Ngawi Regency on Tuesday, one of its components detached and crashed.

The Indonesian Air Force has assured that no one was injured in the incident.

The detached component came from the jet’s main weaponry system. A resident of Dawu Village, Paron District, Ngawi Regency, found the metallic object that fell from the sky at around 07.50 WIB, soon after an aircraft passed the area. The cone-shaped component was about 60-70 cm in length and weighed between 10-15 kg, local media reported. Experts speculate that the component could be the cover of the T-50i canon’s barrel.

The KAI T-50 Golden Eagle is a family of South Korean supersonic advanced jet trainers and light combat aircraft, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) with American firm Lockheed Martin. Indonesia ordered 16 T-50s for $400 million in May 2011 to replace old BAE Systems Hawk Mk 53 jets. KAI made a filing to the Seoul stock exchange on July 20, 2021, announcing the sale of six more T-50i jet trainers to Indonesia, listing a contract value of $240 million.
