Uralvagonzavod (UVZ), a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned Rostec has delivered a batch of new T-90M Proryv tanks to the Russian Army.
The T-90M is the latest modification of the Russian T-90 main battle tank.
UVZ reportedly started serial deliveries of T-90Ms to the military in February 2021. In April 2020, the press service of the Western Military District (ZVO) reported that the Taman Division near Moscow (part of the First Tank Army) received the first T-90Ms. A year later, a batch of T-90Ms entered the Sevastopol motorized rifle brigade (First Tank Army of the Western Military District), the press service of the district reported.
"The T-90M is the most advanced vehicle in the T-90 family. It implements an inter-object interaction complex, the tank is able to operate in modern network-centric combat operations," head of UVZ Alexander Potapov told Interfax news agency earlier. "The reliability of all types of equipment and apparatus has been significantly increased: even if the fire control system fails or if there is no power from the on-board network, the tank will not fail," Potapov said at the time.
The T-90M is equipped with a new combat turret module with a powerful 125mm tank gun capable of using new ammunition, as well as a guided missile that can destroy enemy tanks at a distance of up to 5 km. The high-speed characteristics of the T-90M tank, fuel efficiency and power reserve are provided by a 1130 hp diesel engine.
In 2018, Yuri Borisov, being Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation (now Deputy Prime Minister), stated that the Russian Ministry of Defense intends to purchase about 200 tanks annually.
Russia ranked first in the world in terms of the number of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and multiple launch rocket systems, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov announced in September 2017.
