South Korea’s Redback armored vehicle, manufactured by Hanwha Defense, roared through puddles, traversed unpaved roads and shifted course smoothly on Friday in its first local capability demonstration open to the press at an Army training site.
The event was held at the 11th Maneuver Division in Hongcheon, 102 km east of Seoul.
Phase 3 of the LAND 400 project will manage the acquisition of up to 450 infantry fighting vehicles and 17 maneuver support vehicles. The total acquisition cost of the vehicles is estimated to be worth up to $27 billion. In September 2019, the Australian Government shortlisted Rheinmetall with its Lynx KF41 and Hanwha with its AS21 Redback vehicle. The shortlisted vehicles will undergo a rigorous testing and evaluation process. The selection of the preferred tenderer is expected in 2022. Should Rheinmetall be selected as the preferred tenderer, it will deliver the infantry fighting vehicles from the MILVEHCOE.
