Submarine That Russia Received from Ukraine to be Armed with Cruise Missiles
Russia's Alrosa, World's only pumpjet-propelled submarine to be armed with cruise missiles

The Russian Black Sea Fleet’s oldest submarine, 'Alrosa' which Moscow Received from Kyiv under a 1997 agreement, has been upgraded to carry Kalibr cruise missiles.
The vessel will soon make its first voyage in eight years in the form of sea trials as extensive repairs and upgrades have been completed, TASS reported quoting sources in the Black Sea Fleet’s 13th ship repair plant.
Kalibr cruise missile-armed ships and submarines have been a major factor in Russia's dominance over Ukraine in the current conflict. It is not yet clear if and when the Alrosa will join the fight against Ukraine in the Black Sea even as Moscow has been putting all its resources into the fight.
It was reported last month that the submarine’s repairs had been completed. Alrosa acquired new combat and technical capabilities, which "put it on a par with the six submarines joined the Black Sea Fleet in recent years," TASS said.
The Alrosa is unique in that instead of a propeller-driven propulsion, it is equipped with a water jet, which makes its movement quiet and hard to detect. It is said to be the only submarine of its kind in the world equipped with a pumpjet
The Alrosa carries hull number B-871. It was launched on 10 September 1989 and commissioned on 1 December 1990. In 1991, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the crew of the boat swore allegiance to Ukraine and the ship was in Ukrainain service since then.
It however returned to Russian service in 1997 as part of an agreement between the two nations. The reason for Ukraine to return the submarine is said to be lack of spares and ability to repair the vessel.
