A Russian missile attack on Ukraine's Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant located in in Dnepropetrovsk destroyed the workshops for the production of components and the repair of Tochka-U missiles, according to the Russian MoD.
"Air-launched long-range weapons in the city of Dnepropetrovsk destroyed the workshops for the production of components and the repair of Tochka-U ballistic missiles and multiple rocket launchers at the Yuzhny Mashinostroitelny Zavod defense enterprise," Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Saturday.
It is not yet known what facilities were crippled due to the Russian missile attack and whether the company's space launch vehicles, for which has contracts with American and Canadian space ventures, were affected.
The Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant is Ukraine's main manufacturing base for its space and missile programs. According to the company's website, "since the 1950s (Yuzhny has manufactured) four generations of strategic missile systems, about 400 spacecraft of 70 various modifications and space launch vehicles of “Cyclone”, “Cosmos”, “Zenit” series have been created in Dnipropetrovsk."
It lists its areas of expertise as production, testing, operation of launch vehicles; defense industry; air transport; agricultural machinery and thermal power-stations.
Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant has extensive cooperation with American and Canadian companies in space programs. It has partnered with Northrop Grumman on creating the main structure of the first stage of the Antares LV rocket.
It is collaborating with the Canadian company Maritime Launch Services on creating a rocket and space port. As part of the project, Ukrainain Design Bureau “Pivdenne” will be responsible for the development, testing and operation of the launch vehicle and ground-based facilities. Yuzhmash will be the manufacturer and supplier of Cyclone-4M launch vehicle for Maritime Launch Services.
In addition Yuzhny delivered a "docking model" of the first stage of the medium-range launch vehicle to U.S. based Firefly Aerospace in August 2021. The model was made at YUZHMASH under a contract with FireFly Aerospace, Inc. and in accordance with its design documentation. The product will simulate the docking of two to four engine units on liquid fuel components.
