Russian forces guarding the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (NPP) reportedly shot down a Kamikaze drone flying over the plant.
The nuclear plant in question is located in the city of Energodar, in the Russian controlled Zaporizhia region.
"Servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces shot down a kamikaze drone of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while its designated target was a spent nuclear fuel storage facility, as evidenced by the flight path of the loitering munition. The drone crashed on the roof of a special building of the nuclear power plant," press service of the city administration told reporters Sunday.
No damage to life or infrastructure have been reported.
Russia’a Ministry of Defense had previously reported multiple strikes on the power plant and the infrastructure. Though none of the strikes have disrupted the reactors, damage to auxiliary support systems, including pools of the cooling system, hits near the storage of radioactive isotopes have been noted.
Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It has six VVER-1000 power units. The first power unit was put into operation in December 1984.
