The Hellenic Army has taken delivery of six Marder 1A3 tracked infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) from Germany.
“The arrival of Marder 1A3 will continue in the next period according to schedule aiming at the upgrading of the army’s strength in battle and the strengthening of the army’s interoperability,” the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) said in a press release on Monday.
This is part of a swap deal under which Germany has agreed to hand over 40 Marder IFVs to Greece, in return for Greece’s provision of 40 of its Soviet-built BMP01 IFVs to Ukraine.
As per reports, Berlin will deliver another 14 tanks to Greece by the end of this month.
Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding (MOU), Germany will cover the costs of transporting the Marder IFVs to Greece and will also furnish ammunition for the vehicles' 20 mm MK 20 Rh 202 cannons and spare parts, as well as provide training for Greek crews.
