The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has rejected media reports claiming that Brigadier General Michael Opoku was arrested by security operatives for possessing ammunition.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 19, and signed by Captain V.A. Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the military high command said all checks with security agencies and national investigative bodies failed to confirm the alleged arrest.

“As at date, all enquiries from various Security Agencies and National Investigation Authorities have not corroborated the said publication of arrest,” the statement read.

The Armed Forces clarified that Brigadier General Opoku remains an active member of the GAF and has not been detained for any crime. “The Armed Forces can confirm that Brigadier General Michael Opoku remains an active member of the Ghana Armed Forces and is not under arrest for any crime committed,” the release emphasized.

Reaffirming its stance on accountability, the GAF said any soldier involved in criminal activity would face the law. “The Ghana Armed Forces however, wishes to assure the general public that notwithstanding the false publication, any military personnel involved in any crime of any nature would be subjected to the same procedure as any other citizen of the Country.”

The military urged the public to disregard the viral claims, describing them as false and misleading. It also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
