Ukraine is transforming T-64 tanks into armored personnel carriers (APCs), photographs and video footage shared in social media show.
The “new” APCs have caterpillar tracks and elements of dynamic protection, usually installed only on tanks, Russia; topcor.ru reports.
The main armament of the APC is a 30mm cannon.
Such armored vehicles are already used in the Bakhmut area. A video using a similar vehicle helping a MT-LB APC stuck near a aroad was shared on TikTok.
Ukraine’s media reported that during the modification of the T-64 into armored recovery vehicle, the tank ‘lost’ its turret, but received a raise, which was protected with Kontakt-1 ERA.
A module with a heavy machine gun, and smoke grenade launchers were also installed for protection.
Presumably, a traction winch is installed in the rear, which is protected by armored sides.
It is unlikely that the vehicle is used for landing operations, so troops should be located in the area of the engine compartment of the armored vehicle.
This modification on the basis of the Т-64 tank resembles the BREM-64 armored recovery vehicle, which was also made on the basis of the Т-64.
However, in the USSR BREM-64 did not go into the series. According to available information, the sample was subsequently converted into an MTU-64 bridge-laying tank.
