The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) has extended and expanded its contract with Kongsberg to overhaul and make ready for sale a total of 32 F-16 combat aircraft.
The agreement also includes technical assistance and support for the training of Romanian technical personnel. The contract value is above 700 MNOK ($65 million).
Norway finished taking its 64 F-16s, purchased in the 1980s, out of active service in early 2022 as it started deploying fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighters.
In November 2022, Norway said it will sell 32 used F-16 fighter jets to fellow NATO member Romania for $385 million. The contract includes the sale of spare parts, maintenance and training of technicians.
The F-16 combat aircraft will be returned to operating status and then maintained so that they are ready for service again. Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services has 40 years of experience in maintaining, repairing and upgrading Norway’s F-16 fleet.
