Germany’s parliamentary budget committee has given the green light for the country to buy 60 Chinook helicopters for €8 billion (over $8.5 billion).

Two members of the parliamentary budget committee revealed this information to Reuters on Wednesday.

The U.S. State Department in May formally approved the sale. Chinook beat out Sikorsky’s CH-53K King Stallion to bag this contract. Germany announced its intent to buy them in June 2022.

The sum covers the procurement of CH-47 heavy-lift helicopters for €6.27 billion ($6.8 billion), €700 million ($760 million) for service, €240 million ($260 million) for national contracts and €750 million ($816 million) for infrastructure.

Berlin plans to house 47 of those helicopters in Holzdorf, where it is also deploying Arrow-3 missile defense units.
