Specialists in Ukraine have acquired the expertise to prolong the operational lifespan of Soviet-made Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs).

This development, announced by the Ukrainian General Staff, has bolstered the country's defense capabilities against the ongoing Russian invasion.

The initiative, led by experts from the Command of the Logistics Forces and its subordinate units, has breathed new life into aging Soviet missiles designed for ATGM systems. Traditionally, these missiles would need to be sent back to the original manufacturer for repair and maintenance, often located in countries previously associated with the Soviet Union. However, Ukrainian experts have now devised a method that allows all essential procedures to be carried out domestically.

"The second life of Soviet missiles of the ATGMs is given by the specialists of the Command of the Logistics Forces and its subordinate units," the General Staff announced, highlighting the significance of this breakthrough.

This development is particularly crucial as the Ukrainian Armed Forces heavily rely on Soviet-made MANPADS (Man-Portable Air-Defense Systems) and ATGMs to counter the Russian invasion. These ATGMs, short for Anti-Tank Guided Missile Systems, play a vital role in hindering the advance of heavy enemy armor.

ATGMs are equipped with launchers that can be mounted on specialized platforms or vehicles, depending on the system's weight and firepower. The guidance device within the ATGM systems can vary, with older models requiring manual targeting and continuous operator attention, while modern versions can fire automatically, allowing operators to reposition after locking onto a target.

The ability to extend the service life of these ATGM missiles domestically not only saves time but also ensures that Ukraine can maintain defense against the ongoing aggression from Russia. With this approach, Ukrainian forces can effectively repurpose and maintain their existing Soviet-era arsenal, enhancing their capacity to thwart hostile advances.
