The Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces of the Czech Republic unveiled plans today to initiate negotiations for the potential acquisition of the Embraer C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft.
With these aircraft, the Czech Army will be able to execute a wide range of missions, including air transport, air assault operations, aerial resupply, medical evacuation, humanitarian aid delivery, air-to-air refueling, and firefighting. Embraer claims the C-390 Millennium boasts lower maintenance requirements compared to other aircraft.
The ongoing negotiations are aimed at the prospective signing of an acquisition contract for two aircraft, accompanied by comprehensive support. This support encompasses a complete training solution for pilots, loadmasters, and technicians, spare parts, and an efficient entry-into-operation plan, which includes the presence of Embraer personnel in the Czech Republic for an initial period.
The Czech Republic has been an active partner in the development and production of the C-390 Millennium. Czech company Aero Vodochody, already contributes to the production of critical components, including the rear fuselage, doors for paratroopers and crew, emergency doors and hatches, the cargo ramp, and the fixed leading edge.
The C-390 can transport up to 26 tons and has maximum speed of 470 knots. This plane can operate from temporary or unpaved runways, including packed earth, soil, and gravel surfaces. When configured with air-to-air refueling as the KC-390, it demonstrates proficiency as both a tanker and a receiver, enabling fuel transfer via pods under the wings.
