The Government of Slovakia canceled a Euro 40 million military aid package to Ukraine, its 14th since the war with Russia began in 2022.
The Slovak Ministry of Defense had prepared the assistance package, but the new government under President Robert Fico rejected it under its policy of stopping or limiting military aid to Kyiv.
The new government’s position on ending arms transfers to Kyiv is supported by a recent survey in Slovakia in which a majority of people believe that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began because of the policies of Western countries, Slovak media, Aktuality.sk reported
The package was to include 4 million rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 5,172 units of large-caliber 125mm ammunition, 140 missiles for the Kub surface-to-air missile system, eight mortars, and 1,200 mortars.
Slovakia is one of the most prominent aid-givers to Ukraine having previously handed over 13 military aid packages totaling about Euro 671 million. Besides Slovakia had transferred 13 MiG-29 aircraft to making it one of the biggest fighter jet donations to Ukraine.
This follows a recent trend of the amount of weapons given to Ukraine by donor nations showing a sharp downturn. Some countries have even asked Kyiv to pay for the weapons.
