Germany Approves Integration of Electronic Combat System into Eurofighter Jets

Following a recent nod from the German budget committee, Airbus is moving forward with plans to upgrade 15 German Eurofighters with the Eurofighter EK (Electronic Combat) system.

This electronic combat system is aimed at enhancing NATO's strategic capabilities.

The approved upgrades include the incorporation of a transmitter location system and self-protection technology from Saab, a renowned defense and security company. Additionally, the Eurofighter EK will be armed with "AARGM" anti-radar missiles, supplied by the prominent American defense contractor Northrop Grumman. These enhancements position the Eurofighter EK as a formidable asset in the Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) role, earmarked to replace the aging Tornado aircraft by 2030.

Commenting on the decision, Airbus Defence and Space CEO Michael Schöllhorn emphasized the critical role of electronic warfare and reconnaissance in meeting NATO requirements. "Electronic warfare and reconnaissance are an important NATO requirement: current conflicts and the present security situation show how important the two capabilities are," he stated.

The parliamentary approval cements the Eurofighter's status as the official successor to the Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance). Airbus anticipates the official order to commence the integration of selected technical solutions into the Eurofighter, with the contract expected to be inked between Eurofighter GmbH and NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) by year-end.

The Eurofighter EK's advanced capabilities, powered by Saab's transmitter location system and Northrop Grumman's AARGM, enable it to detect, localize, and disable anti-aircraft radars. The Saab solution also includes sophisticated jammers to enhance the Eurofighter's self-protection measures. Notably, the Eurofighter EK incorporates technologies developed by small and medium-sized enterprises, including an artificial intelligence solution for onboard analysis of radar data, enabling swift and precise self-protection measures.

Currently, Airbus collaborates with the BAAINBw procurement office, the German Air Force, and the Bundeswehr Aviation Office to finalize a detailed schedule for the seamless implementation of the selected EK solutions in the 15 Eurofighters.
