Two commercial vessels faced separate attacks in the Southern Red Sea by Houthi militants on December 18, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The chemical/oil tanker SWAN ATLANTIC, flagged in the Cayman Islands, was struck by an attack drone and an anti-ship ballistic missile launched from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. The USS CARNEY (CCG 64) responded to assess damage, and the vessel reported an impact, requesting assistance. Simultaneously, the bulk cargo ship M/V CLARA reported an explosion near its location, unrelated to the SWAN ATLANTIC attack, with no damage or support request.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Additional information reveals a prior attack on December 15 when Houthi forces threatened the Liberian-flagged motor ship MSC ALANYA, later hitting the Liberian-flagged motor ship AL JASRAH with a UAV. Furthermore, two ballistic missiles targeted international shipping lanes in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, hitting the Liberian-flagged MSC PALATIUM 3. USS MASON responded to the mayday call, and no injuries were reported on the three attacked ships.

CENTCOM emphasized the significant threat Houthi actions pose to international shipping.

The Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile (ASBM) used in these attacks is specifically designed for naval targets. Notable examples, such as China's DF-21D, pose challenges to maritime defense due to high speed, maneuverability, and a guidance system enabling engagement with moving sea targets. China, Russia, India, and Iran have made advancements in ASBM technology, with Iran's capability confirmed by the recent incidents. The U.S. aims to counter ASBMs with laser weapons.
