The Norwegian government has inked a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) for the acquisition of new NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defence systems.
The contract, valued at approximately NOK 1.4 billion, is set to replace previously donated equipment to Ukraine.
The deal, facilitated by the Norwegian Defence Material Agency, encompasses the procurement of new multi-missile canister launchers and Fire Distribution Centers for NASAMS. These updates are aimed at enhancing Norway's air defence capabilities to combat contemporary and future challenges.
Norway's Defence Minister, Bjørn Arild Gram, stressed the importance of these investments in light of the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the critical role of air defence. "These are investments that secure the country. The war in Ukraine has shown how important air defence is, and before Christmas, the Norwegian government was able to present a record order for air defence to the Norwegian Armed Forces. We have taken extraordinary measures to speed up the acquisition. The contract for the re-acquisition of donated material is the first step," stated Gram.
The NASAMS system is anticipated to be delivered in 2026-2027.
