Greece received the first batch of Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk maritime multi-mission helicopters on March 20.
The ceremony, held at Naval Fort Kotroni in Marathon, marked the transfer of three out of seven helicopters destined for the Hellenic Navy (HN). Remaining helicopters will be handed over to Greece next year.
“At the ceremony of receiving and joining the Naval Aviation Command (NAC) of three new MH-60 Romeo helicopters from the Navy, at the Marathon Base, in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakou Mitsotakis,” Greek defense minister Nikos Dendias said in a post on social media platform X.
The event was attended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other high-ranking Greek and U.S. government officials and military figures.
The procurement of the MH-60R helicopters was conducted through Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreements, split into two batches. The first order was placed in July 2020 for four helicopters, followed by an additional three in April 2021.
The comprehensive deal, valued at approximately $600 million, includes provisions for spares, systems, weaponry, training, and logistical support.
These helicopters are set to replace the aging AB212 ASW (anti-submarine warfare) helicopters, which have been operational since the early 1980s.
