The Netherlands defense ministry and Dutch Naval Design have entered into a partnership to develop unmanned surface vessels (USVs) for maritime operations, expected to be ready for deployment in about four years.
The contract formalizing this collaboration was signed two days ago.
These USVs, measuring 12 meters in length, will be integral to anti-submarine warfare efforts, working alongside Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates scheduled for delivery around 2030. Currently, frigates utilize helicopters for anti-submarine missions, but the USVs will provide additional capabilities in this domain.
The USVs boast autonomy, sustainability, and operational flexibility. Equipped with specialized sonar systems, they will enhance underwater detection capabilities crucial for countering submarines.
Dutch Naval Design, a consortium of maritime defense experts from industry and academia, will lead the development of these vessels.
