From mid-January to mid-May this year, 300 Ukrainian marines underwent intensive training in the Netherlands, focusing on amphibious operations.
This training, provided by the Dutch Marine Corps and supported by Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Sweden, also included exercises in urbanized areas and trench warfare. Due to potential security risks, this information has only recently been disclosed to the House of Representatives.
Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren emphasized the importance of the training, citing Ukraine's geographical features, which include wide rivers and long coastlines. "Operating as a marine requires specialist competencies," she stated. Ollongren, who attended a recent exercise by the Ukrainian marines, expressed her admiration for their ability and determination.
Commander of the Armed Forces General Onno Eichelheim highlighted the relevance of the marines' prior combat experience on the Ukrainian front lines, which allowed for the training to be more effectively tailored to current combat scenarios. The Netherlands remains committed to training Ukrainian soldiers both domestically and abroad, with Eichelheim noting the gratitude expressed by the Ukrainian marines for the expertise shared.
The training sessions underscore the collaborative effort among allied nations, demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine. Eichelheim asserted, "We are sending a strong signal: we will continue to jointly support the Ukrainians in their fight for the sovereignty of their country. That fight is also about the security of Europe."
