Sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT is set to enhance the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces by equipping their helicopters with advanced detection and self-protection sensors.

This latest order includes further deliveries of the Airborne Missile Protection System (AMPS), with the contract valued in the double-digit million range. This initiative follows HENSOLDT’s initial delivery of 16 AMPS self-protection solutions to Ukraine in June of last year.

“With AMPS, we are increasing the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian helicopters,” stated Tanya Altmann, Head of the Optronics & Land Solutions Division at HENSOLDT. “By integrating this platform, which is new to us, we are protecting the crews from a wide range of threats, especially from surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.”

The Airborne Missile Protection System is designed to be a flexible, stand-alone self-protection solution for both helicopters and airplanes. Its modular design allows for easy configuration to meet specific operational requirements and adapt to different mission profiles. Key components of AMPS include the Missile Launch Detection Sensor (MILDS), an AMPS Control and Display Unit (ACDU), and the active confirmation system (MACS), which identifies the distance and speed of detected missiles, eliminating false alarms. The system also integrates with existing Counter Measure Dispensing Systems (CMDS) already installed on helicopters.

In recent operational areas, a high percentage of aircraft losses have been attributed to infrared surface-to-air missiles (IR SAMs). Moreover, the prevalence of laser and radar threats in combat zones necessitates reliable detection systems. AMPS addresses these threats by incorporating missile, laser, and radar warning systems, ensuring comprehensive protection through rapid threat detection.
