KNDS, the joint venture between KMW and Nexter Defense Systems, is set to reveal two main battle tank prototypes: the LEOPARD 2 A-RC 3.0 and the Leclerc Evolution, at the upcoming Eurosatory 2024 exhibition in Paris.
The LEOPARD 2 A-RC 3.0, features a remotely operated turret, a modular self-loading cannon adaptable between 120mm and 140mm calibers, and a design preventing turret intrusion into the chassis. These enhancements optimize internal space for the three to four crew members housed in a fortified compartment, ensuring enhanced survivability in the heat of battle. Furthermore, the tank is equipped with an array of defensive measures including an active protection system and a remotely operated cupola to fend off drone threats.
Notably, the tank also sports an anti-tank missile system for engaging targets beyond direct line of sight, along with a 30mm turret to counter short-range threats from both air and land. The integration of passive, reactive, and active protection technologies. KNDS envisions this model as a precursor to the future Main Ground Combat System (MGCS).
Reducing the crew complement to three individuals, KNDS ensures their safety with a specially fortified compartment. The tank's turret design minimizes its profile, reducing visibility, while an automatic loading mechanism enables a rapid rate of fire. The turret allows for the accommodation of guns ranging from 120mm to 140mm, with ammunition capacity surpassing that of standard Leopard 2 tanks. Additionally, the turret can be outfitted with a remote weapon system, providing additional firepower and flexibility on the battlefield.
The tank weighs in at under 60 tons, with dimensions of 7.95 meters in length (11.17 meters with gun), 3.73 meters in width, and a ground clearance of 500 millimeters. Powered by a 1500 horsepower engine, it boasts speeds of up to 65 kilometers per hour and a range of 460 kilometers on roads.
In addition to the LEOPARD 2 A-RC 3.0, KNDS is also set to showcase ASCALON, a main gun for battle tanks. ASCALON's programmable ammunition allows for firing beyond direct line of sight with minimal wear, featuring scalable tubes ranging from 120mm to 140mm. This platform, designed with an open architecture, paves the way for collaborative development within the MGCS program, establishing a new benchmark for European tank guns and munitions.
Additionally, the Leclerc Evolution, also to be featured at Eurosatory, showcases a manned turret armed with the ASCALON 120mm cannon, adaptable up to 140mm. This tank introduces a four-member crew concept, with an assistant commander stationed in the chassis to oversee sensors and effectors, aligning with contemporary tactical strategies.
