The Greek navy ship HS Psara averted a drone attack by Houthi forces while escorting and protecting a freighter through the Gulf of Aden as part of the EU operation Aspides, last night.

The Greek crew, using various weapon systems and the ship's cannon, shot down two drones, ensuring the safety of the freighter without any injuries or material damage.

The incident occurred off the Somali coast, highlighting the ongoing threats to maritime security in the region. The Dutch Navy's Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman played a crucial role by warning their Greek counterparts of the approaching drones. Additionally, Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman was prepared to offer medical support if necessary.

Among those on board the HS Psara during the attack were three Dutch staff members, including Commander George Pastoor, who was on a working visit. Commander Pastoor remarked on the incident: "This attack shows that it is still very unsafe for shipping in this region. With the deployment of units from EU countries, we are able to protect shipping and maintain free passage.” He, along with his international staff, is in tactical command of EU Operation Aspides from Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman.

On July 3, HS Psara carried out another successful close protection operation for a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden. This earlier operation involved safeguarding a container ship belonging to the Genoese shipping company, Linea Messina.

Houthi units in Yemen continue to pose a significant threat in the region, utilizing various types of drones for reconnaissance and attacks on military bases, critical infrastructure, and shipping. These drones, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), have been used to inflict substantial damage with limited resources.

In response to the growing threat, the Royal Navy has been conducting exercises and developing new systems to combat drone attacks from both the air and the water surface. The EU Operation Aspides remains dedicated to promoting free passage and the protection of shipping in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Gulf region. The safe and unhindered transport of goods by sea is of direct interest to Europe, as these routes are currently threatened by Houthi attacks using drones and ballistic missiles.
