Japan's Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) is investigating the sharing of a photo and information on social media related to a missile model believed to be under development.
The posts, which have since been removed, were not confidential, according to JASDF officials.
JASDF Chief of Staff Gen. Hiroaki Uchikura expressed regret over the incident, stating, "The ASDF's information being spread in an inappropriate manner is extremely regrettable and we will respond strictly." He emphasized the need for more detailed and understandable social media guidelines for personnel.
The photo is thought to have been taken at the ASDF base in Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture, which handles the development and testing of the ASDF's equipment. The posts also mentioned existing equipment.
While the ASDF confirmed that no defense secrets were leaked, they are investigating potential breaches of internal rules regarding the use of privately owned devices. This incident follows previous criticisms of the Self-Defense Forces for mishandling defense secrets, including on a destroyer. The Defense Ministry is expected to announce related punishments soon.
