The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded Raytheon a $478 million contract to supply additional GEM-T missiles to Germany.
This contract supports the replenishment of Patriot missiles donated by Germany to Ukraine. In a show of strong support for Ukraine, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have agreed to participate in the financing of this procurement.
The GEM-T missile is an enhanced Patriot Advanced Capability 2 (PAC-2) missile interceptor, designed to defeat cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, enemy drones, and aircraft. The missile utilizes a combination of infrared and radar guidance to track and intercept targets with precision. It is equipped with a high-explosive warhead. In terms of range, the GEM-T can engage ballistic missiles at distances of approximately 20-40 km (12-25 miles) and aircraft at up to 60 km (37 miles). This missile is capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 3.5 (around 4,200 km/h or 2,600 mph), allowing it to quickly respond to emerging threats. The GEM-T is also interoperable, compatible with both Patriot PAC-2 and PAC-3 systems, enabling integration into existing defense networks.
