The U.S. Air Force’s B-2 Spirit stealth bomber recently demonstrated a low-cost, air-delivered method for neutralizing surface vessels during a QUICKSINK test in the Gulf of Mexico near Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

This capability is an answer to an urgent need to quickly neutralize maritime threats over massive expanses of ocean around the world, the air force said in an official statement. No other details were provided.

The QUICKSINK test, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Navy, involved a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber delivering the new capability as part of the second RIMPAC SINKEX exercise in July. The demonstration marks a key advancement in the Air Force's naval warfare capabilities, highlighting a collaboration between the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the U.S. Navy, and industry partners.

This technology ensures the United States can defend its interests, maintain freedom of action, and seize the initiative over large maritime areas,” said Col. Matthew Caspers, Director of the AFRL Munitions Directorate.

The AFRL Munitions Directorate, based at Eglin Air Force Base, is engaged in an ongoing Maritime Weapon Program alongside the U.S. Navy.

The tests come amid increased Iran-backed Houthi attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea. The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) reported that from December 2023 to mid-February 2024, container shipping in the region decreased by 90%. Despite U.S. and European countermeasures, including Operation Prosperity Guardian and the EU's ASPIDES mission, the Houthis conducted over 43 attacks between November 19 and March 23, resulting in increased security costs and insurance premiums.
