A large-scale drone attack on Moscow has reportedly been launched by Ukraine, which local officials describe as the largest so far.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, Russian air defenses allegedly intercepted and downed Ukrainian attack drones overnight near Moscow. "This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever… The layered defense of Moscow that was created made it possible to successfully repel all the attacks from the enemy UAVs,” Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app in the early hours of Wednesday.
Russia's defense ministry reported destroying 45 drones over Russian territory, including 11 near Moscow, 23 in Bryansk, and others in Belgorod, Kaluga, and Kursk regions. Some were downed over Podolsk, 38 km (24 miles) south of the Kremlin.
Ukraine's military has yet to comment on the reported attack, and Kyiv does not always officially acknowledge responsibility for incidents on Russian soil.
Although photos and videos on social media appear to show the drones being shot down, their authenticity cannot be independently verified.
This incident aligns with a broader pattern of Ukrainian drone strikes and sabotage on Russian territory, often targeting military bases, oil refineries, and industrial facilities. While Ukraine has previously targeted Moscow with drone attacks, it frequently refrains from claiming official responsibility.
No immediate information is available regarding damage or casualties resulting from the reported attack.
